What Is MAP Growth? A Parent's Complete Guide to NWEA Scores

Every few months, millions of students across the United States sit down at a computer and take a test called MAP Growth. Schools use the results to track academic progress, identify learning gaps, and set goals for the year ahead. But for parents, the score report that comes home can feel more confusing than clarifying.

What does a RIT score mean? Is the 50th percentile good? Why does the test look different every time a child takes it?

This guide explains exactly how MAP Growth works, what the results mean, and what parents can do to help their child perform at their best.

What Is MAP Growth?

MAP Growth is an adaptive, computerized assessment developed by the Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA), an assessment and research organization. NWEA is now a division of Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH).

MAP stands for Measures of Academic Progress. The assessment is designed to measure both where a student is performing academically and how much they are growing over time.

MAP Growth is available in four subjects:

Reading (K-12): K-2 tests foundational phonics and comprehension skills, with audio support for all students. For grade 2 and above, the focus shifts to comprehension, and audio is available only with a documented accommodation.
Language Usage (grades 2-12): Covers grammar, language mechanics, and writing-related skills. This test is not available for kindergarten or grade 1, and does not include open-ended writing or composition.
Math (K-12): Assesses grade-appropriate math skills. Audio support is provided for all K-2 students; above grade 2, audio is available with a documented accommodation only.
Science (grades 2-12): Not available for K-1. Covers grade-level science concepts and skills.

School districts choose which subject tests to administer. A district may use only reading and math, or it may use all four. Each subject is a separate test; students cannot combine subjects in a single sitting.

How Does MAP Growth Work?

MAP Growth is an adaptive test, which means no two students see exactly the same set of questions. When a student answers a question correctly, the next question is harder. When a student answers incorrectly, the next question is easier. This back-and-forth process hones in on the student's current level of ability.

Because of this adaptive design, MAP Growth cannot be taken with paper and pencil. It must be completed on a computer. The platform includes a range of built-in supports such as a ruler, highlighter, and line reader. Some are available to all students, and others available to those with documented accommodations.

Students in grades 2-12 typically answer 40-43 questions per test. The assessment is not timed, but it generally takes between 45 and 55 minutes.

Most students are tested two to three times per year, in fall, winter, and spring testing windows. If a district tests only twice a year, the winter window is skipped.

MAP Growth is chosen by the school district, not by individual teachers or parents. It is not a test that families can independently register for, like the SAT. While NWEA is a US-based organization, MAP Growth is used in schools internationally as well.

Understanding MAP Growth Scores

RIT Scores

MAP Growth reports results using a RIT score (Rasch Unit). The RIT scale is consistent across all grade levels, which makes it a powerful tool for tracking long-term growth.

For example, if a fourth-grade student and an eighth-grade student have the same RIT score in reading, they are performing at the same level in that subject. A parent can compare a child's fall RIT score to their spring RIT score and see directly how much progress was made, without needing to adjust for grade-level changes.

A RIT score represents the difficulty level of a question that a student can answer correctly about 50% of the time. The scale ranges from 100 to 350 in math and 100 to 320 in reading, but it is not realistic, or expected, for students to score near the top of that range. The RIT scale is not a percentage grade. A score of 198 is not "198 out of 350."

Percentiles

Because raw RIT scores can be hard to interpret without context, many parents find it easier to focus on percentile scores first.

A percentile rank shows how a student's score compares to other students in the same grade level who took MAP Growth during the same testing season. A student scoring in the 50th percentile scored higher than 50% of students in their grade nationally.

Percentile and percent are not the same thing. Scoring in the 50th percentile is not a score of "50%" or "50 out of 100" on a traditional test. It means the student is performing at the national average for their grade.

NWEA publishes normed data to establish these percentile rankings. Their most recent norms, published in 2025, were based on 116 million scores from 13.8 million students across 30,000 schools.

What Is a "Good" Score?

NWEA does not establish a single "expected" score for each grade level. Instead, it publishes normative data based on average performance, which it updates periodically. The most recent norms were released in 2025.

Rather than focusing on a single benchmark number, parents are better served by looking at two things:

• How does my child's score compare to the national average for their grade and subject?
• How much has my child's score grown since the last testing window?

A student scoring above the 50th percentile is performing above the national average. A student below the 50th percentile may benefit from additional support to close skill gaps. But growth (the change in a student's score over time) is just as important as where a student lands on any single test.

Understanding MAP Growth Reports

Achievement vs. Growth

MAP Growth reports two distinct measurements: achievement (where a student is right now) and growth (how much a student has improved since the last test).

A student can score in the 50th percentile for achievement but rank in the 96th percentile for growth, meaning that while they are performing at the national average, they made more progress than nearly all their peers. Conversely, a high-achieving student who scores in the 90th percentile but shows little growth over time may have underlying skill gaps worth addressing.

The Summer Slide

It is common and expected for a student's RIT score to drop slightly between spring and fall due to the summer break. A small dip of a point or two between the end of one school year and the beginning of the next is not a cause for concern. What matters is the student's growth trajectory throughout the school year and across years.

Instructional Areas

In addition to overall subject scores, MAP Growth reports scores for instructional areas, the specific skill categories within each subject. For reading, these may include phonics, reading comprehension of fiction, reading comprehension of nonfiction, and vocabulary. For math, they include number sense, algebra, geometry, and statistics, among others.

Parents may not receive the full instructional area breakdown by default. If this level of detail is not included in the family report, parents can request it from their child's classroom teacher. Instructional area data is especially useful for tutoring, as it allows instruction to be targeted at specific skill gaps rather than general subject review.

Common Questions From Parents

Is MAP Growth the same as my state's end-of-year assessment?

No. MAP Growth and end-of-year state assessments are fundamentally different in design and purpose.

A state test is standardized: every student in the same grade receives the same questions, all aligned to that grade's standards. Scoring 100% on a state test is theoretically possible (though difficult). MAP Growth, by contrast, is adaptive and intentionally asks questions that are "too hard" for the student in order to find their true performance level. Students are not expected to answer every question correctly.

Note for Missouri families: The state of Missouri also uses the acronym "MAP" for its end-of-year assessment -- the Missouri Assessment Program. Missouri's MAP and NWEA's MAP Growth are separate tests and should not be confused.

Can my child's score be affected by random clicking or guessing?

This is unlikely. MAP Growth includes an algorithm designed to detect when a student is guessing randomly rather than engaging with the test. If the system suspects this is occurring, the test is automatically paused and the student's teacher is notified. In some cases, the test may be reset.

That said, factors like sleep, nutrition, and testing environment can influence a student's performance on any given day. If a teacher or parent believes a score is not representative of what a student actually knows, a retest within the testing window is possible, though these situations are rare.

My high-achieving child has plateaued. Why is growth so hard at the top?

Slower growth at the upper percentile ranges is well-documented. Research from the Fordham Institute indicates that high-achieving students tend to grow at similar rates to their peers in math, but at slightly slower rates in reading.

There are a few reasons for this. First, students who score very high have less room for measurable gains -- the test is now measuring more nuanced, complex skills, and each additional RIT point requires deeper learning. Second, traditional classrooms tend to focus instructional resources on students who are at or below grade level, leaving high achievers with fewer opportunities for advanced challenge. Third, there may be small skill gaps that are going undetected.

For high achievers in reading specifically, continued growth often depends on developing higher-order literacy skills: analyzing author's craft, making inferences, synthesizing multiple texts, evaluating arguments, and building background knowledge to comprehend complex nonfiction. These skills are not always the focus of grade-level classroom instruction, but they are exactly what MAP Growth's upper RIT bands measure.

MAP Growth does not fully assess my child's writing. How can I get a complete picture?

Writing is one of the most difficult academic skills to assess at scale. While MAP Growth's Language Usage test covers grammar, mechanics, and some writing-related concepts, it does not include open-ended composition. Assessing actual writing requires a human evaluator, which is why no standardized test administered to millions of students each year can fully capture a student's writing ability.

For a complete picture of a student's writing skills -- including organization, voice, style, and genre fluency -- direct assessment by a qualified teacher at school or at Cosmo is the most reliable approach.

How can my child prepare for MAP Growth?

NWEA and most educators agree that MAP Growth is not a test that students should try to "study for" in the traditional sense. It is designed to measure what students already know, not how much they've reviewed recently.
